Background of the study
Mobile library applications extend access to catalogs, e‑resources, and services via smartphones, and AI integration—through personalized notifications, chatbot interfaces, and context‑aware recommendations—can enhance usability and user engagement (Khan, 2023). Studies show that AI features increase app adoption and session duration among students (Nguyen, 2025). At Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, a pilot mobile app with AI‑driven push alerts for due dates and resource suggestions has been launched, but its usability and acceptance by students have not been evaluated. Assessing factors such as ease of navigation, feature discoverability, and satisfaction will guide app refinement and broader rollout strategies.

Statement of the problem
Although the AI‑integrated mobile app is available, usage analytics reveal low download and engagement rates. Without usability evaluation, developers cannot identify interface or feature shortcomings that deter student adoption.

Objectives of the study

To evaluate the usability of the AI‑integrated mobile library app.

To identify user interface and functionality issues affecting adoption.

To recommend design and feature enhancements to improve usability.

Research questions

How do students rate the app’s ease of use and feature relevance?

What usability barriers hinder student engagement?

Which AI features most enhance or detract from the user experience?

Significance of the study
Usability insights will enable app developers and library IT teams to optimize design and AI functionalities, increasing student engagement, improving access to library services, and demonstrating the value of mobile innovation in academic settings.

Scope and limitations of the study
This evaluation focuses on the mobile app used by students at Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi. It excludes web‑based interfaces and faculty usage.

Definitions of terms

Usability: The ease with which users can learn and use an application to achieve their goals.

Context‑aware recommendation: AI feature that suggests resources based on user behavior and context.
